چکیده

Oxidative stress is considered one of the main determinants in pathophysiology non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity. The alterations oxidant/antioxidant balance are related to chronic impairment metabolism leading mitochondrial dysfunction. Increased oxidative also triggers hepatocytes pathways, inflammation contributing progression steatohepatitis (NASH). Currently, first-line therapeutic treatment NAFLD based on lifestyle interventions, suggesting Mediterranean Diet (MD) as a preferable nutritional approach due its antioxidant properties. However, it still debated if adherence MD could have role determining risk developing directly or indirectly through effect weight. We enrolled 336 subjects (aged 35.87 ± 10.37 years; BMI 31.18 9.66 kg/m2) assessing anthropometric parameters, habits, metabolic parameters (fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, low-density (LDL) high-density lipoprotein (HDL) alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), γ-glutamyltransferase (γGT), cardio-metabolic indices [Homeostatic Model Assessment Insulin Resistance (HoMA-IR), visceral adipose index (VAI) (FLI)] [with PREvención con DIetaMEDiterránea (PREDIMED) questionnaire]. Subjects with had significantly higher lower than without NAFLD. In multiple regression analysis, PREDIMED score was predictor FLI (p < 0.001) came first, followed by HoMA-IR, while VAI not predictor. A value <6 serve threshold identify patients who more likely 0.001). conclusion, high resulted having Adherence direct NAFLD, regardless tissue.

Association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND The cardioprotective property of the Mediterranean diet has been attributed to its antioxidant capacity, but direct investigation of this mechanism has been limited. OBJECTIVE We examined the association between the Mediterranean diet and an established plasma marker of oxidative stress, the ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), in a well-controlled study of twins. ...
